Summer Preview 2015

August 19 - 22: an experience designed for freshmen

If you are interested in connecting with other first year students who have similar interests, then Summer Preview is a perfect fit and a great way to kick-off your Fall semester.

Summer Preview brings select groups of incoming first year students together who want to explore their new learning environment and get a head start on their college experience. A variety of themes are available. Student Affairs staff, faculty, and student peer mentors will support you during this whole adventure.

Students will participate in a variety of experiences within close proximity to the College of Charleston campus. The focus will be on learning about Charleston and its surroundings, but, we will also talk about the upcoming semester and how to tie in what you are doing in this program and the next few years here.

Themes hold 12 students each creating a congenial small-group atmosphere that allows for interaction among all participants. Themed activities are lead by student Peer Mentors who are under close supervision of College of Charleston faculty and/or staff members. The role of the Peer Mentors is to support program participants as they transition into College of Charleston and begin their first semester on-campus. Additionally, Peer Mentors are tasked with ongoing communications with participants throughout the Fall semester designing several programs that allow students to come together and continue their experiences in Charleston.

Please note: those students selecting Orientation 10 or Sorority Panhellenic Recruitment will not be able participate in Summer Preview because the schedules will conflict.

For Fall 2015, theme schedules have been emailed to participants as of July 20. Residence Life Move-In Information was included in the theme schedules sent out. Registration will be from 1.00 pm - 5.00 pm on August 19. It will occur in New Student Programs. Registration will provide complete schedules, contact information for Peer Mentors, and meal cards to be used throughout the program's duration. A reception for students and parents will be held from 5.30 pm - 7.30 pm on August 19th at Kudu Coffee House (4 Vanderhorst Street).

First Year Study Abroad

As Summer Preview has expanded over the past four years it has allowed for growth of the program into new areas. A pilot project in Spring 2012 (UK Soccer Experience) resulted in a determined effort to create thematic opportunities for freshmen students interested in completing short term study abroad opportunities.
